To see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes.

To lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church.

A Home Away from Home at UCSB

I grew up in Maui and was deeply involved in my youth group, even though my family wasn’t Christian. That community was one of the main ways I felt connected to God. So coming to UCSB to play soccer was exciting, but it also made me nervous. I wondered if I’d feel out of place among people who didn’t share my faith.

After my coach picked me up from the airport, I stayed with a teammate. The first thing I noticed in the house was a sign on the wall that read, “Jesus is Lord.” My teammate was the only other Christian on the team, and she invited me to come to FCA that night. I said yes. That summer gathering helped me find community and friendships that are still dear to me today.

Jen Price directed FCA at the time. For us, her home became a home away from home. College students needed a place to go beyond campus—to share a home-cooked meal, watch a basketball or football game, and gather with friends. Jen made that place for us.

By my junior and senior years, there were younger players on the team, and FCA became a natural way to invite them in. Going together to a huddle helped us connect across class years. Some friendships grew deeper, and I got to mentor girls I might not otherwise have known well. The huddle gave teammates an easy way to explore faith and community.

Jen also led a morning Bible study for women. It was my first time meeting early with peers to read Scripture. Because I was making my own choices in college, it gave me a sense of ownership in my faith.

College also brought social situations I didn’t want to be part of. FCA gave me a community and a meaningful alternative. Looking back, I’m thankful for the place FCA provided—for belonging, friendships, mentorship, and time in God’s Word. It truly felt like home away from home.
